We started our day with the song "Holy is the Lord God Almighty, the earth is full of His Glory". It is. We witnessed it all day long.
We continued our drive down the Oregon coastline on Highway 101. It was a slow journey because we stopped at so many turnouts and scenic overlooks. The views were spectacular! As we were driving away from one overlook Jim looked back and saw the spouting of a whale. I was a bit envious because I missed it, but later we came across large sea lions so I was a somewhat mollified.
Soon after we crossed the California border, we began a new adventure. We drove into the Redwood Forest following an old stagecoach dirt road. The enormity of the trees was beyond our imagination. We hiked a couple of miles through the trails, and talked about the fact that we were looking at the same trees that our forbears looked at as they came west in their stagecoaches. The serenity and beauty of the forest was soothing, and we could feel the difference in the oxygen we were breathing.
The comment that made me laugh out loud came from Jim: "I could make a HUGE bowl out of one of these trees!".
We were surprised at how many bikers there are all through these coastal highways. The hills they encounter are not small! At times we were in mountains, looking down over the ocean. I can see why they would want to journey at a slower speed. There is so much to take in and we know we missed some of the things that you can only absorb at a slower speed.
We topped off our day by going to dinner on Samoa Island at an old logging cookhouse which was built in 1893 to serve the logging industry employees. The place had so much character. We noticed in the guest book that people from all over the world had dined there. The delicious four course dinner was served family style, and I thought they were going to have to roll us out of the door.
Tonight we are in Eureka and I can hardly wait to go to sleep so I can wake up and enjoy tomorrow.
